Why Choose Excalibur Gymnastics?

We are a National Training Center. Excalibur is a 16,200 square foot, air-conditioned facility designed to be the safest environment possible. We upgrade our equipment on an on-going basis, Why Choose Excalibur Gymnastics in Virginia Beach?with a goal of remaining in the Top Ten gyms in the country. Excalibur Gymnastics is one of the most advanced, modern gymnastics training facilities in the region. We offer an air-conditioned gym, with an advanced filtration system clearing chalk from the air. In our lobby, you’ll find a leotard shop and a waiting area with a full view of the gym.

Recreational Program. While we are proud we use Olympic training equipment, we recognize not every gymnast coming through our doors aims for the Olympics. We are happy to offer recreational programs so children can improve and develop coordination, strength, flexibility, and agility through motor activities and progressive gymnastics skills. Children are trained on all Olympic apparatus, including a trampoline. Classes can be one or two hours per week.  View our schedule.

Olympic Week. A curriculum reward system for our students, “My Skill Chart” is an electronic tracking system of all the students in our program, allowing you to check on your child’s progress electronically with each successive Olympic Week we have. The skills at each level have been broken down into achievable steps so that children learn quickly and experience success often. We test every even month. When a student performs a skill correctly 3 times in a row, they get that skill checked off on their curriculum card.

Internationally Trained Instructors. We are proud of the diversity of our staff, bringing their background and training into our gym. Our staff consists of highly motivated, trained professionals with extensive education and training in the Soviet Union, China, Romania, Europe, and here in the United States.

Birthday Parties/Summer Camps/Field Trips. We are not just about taking classes! We recognize that children love the Excalibur experience so much they want to spend their birthday with us. Gymnastics Strength Training Tips

At Excalibur, we see all levels of fitness, strength, and coordination. We cannot always predict who will become a successful gymnast but we do know that no one has ever become a successful gymnast without gymnastics strength training. This training is at the very core of gymnastics conditioning. Our gymnastics programs focuses on strength and conditioning, building muscle, preventing injury to your body, and preparing it for more advanced moves.

Here are three gymnastics strength training exercises you can begin with (and continue to use throughout your training as a gymnast).

Hollow Body Hold.

Lie down on your back, with your legs outstretched and together. Straighten your legs by flexing your knees, ensuring proper form by pointing your toes as far away from your body as possible. Reach your arms overhead towards ceiling, straightening your elbows and looking up.

From this stretched-out position, engage your entire anterior core by lifting your arms and legs off the floor. While squeezing your entire abdomen, press your lower back into the ground.  Make sure shoulders are lifted and your ribs are tucked in. Focus on keeping your body shape smooth and round, think of it like a banana. Hold for a full sixty seconds.

Arch Body Hold

The opposite of hollow body, yet most experts feel just as important. Where the hollow body works the entire anterior core, the arch body hold position strengthens the areas along your posterior chain.

Lie face down on your belly, arms outstretched and legs straight and together. Bridge your entire body as much as possible, lifting your upper and lower body as high as you can. Engage your glutes and mid-back.  By doing this, you won’t only be arching from your lower back.

When collapsing the arch body hold, bring your arms down to your side, bending your knees, or both.

Quad Stretch

Gymnastics Strength Training TipsThe quad stretch will gage flexibility through the hips and spine. If you have tight hamstrings, this might be a challenge. Stand tall, as your legs will need to be straight and knees flexed.  Completely bend forward, placing your hands on the ground as fully as possible. Try to have your hands behind your feet to the point where you can press your bodyweight up onto your toes. To the left you will see a modification of the quad stretch, consider placing one foot forward and stretching to your toes and then holding, starting with 30 seconds.

At Excalibur, our conditioning program calls for exercises that blend stamina, stability, balance, power and strength. Because of this, Excalibur is the best gym for strength training and developing gymnastics skills.

Balance Check: Finding the Best Fit in Coaches

Finding the Best Fit in Gymnastics Coaches in Virginia BeachEngaging children in sports is beneficial for their physical and mental well-being.  Gymnastics is a unique form, encompassing flexibility, strength, power, balance, coordination, and air awareness.

Yet how do you know your child is working with the right person, the right coach, particularly if you as a parent are new to gymnastics?

Attend the gym that employs the coach.  Watch the instructors and coaches teaching. Are they enthusiastic and teaching the safety aspects of a certain skill?  A great coach makes all the difference in your child’s gymnastics experience. There are certain qualities to seek out in a gymnastics coach.

  • Exhibit energy and vitality

That said, instructors at Excalibur have a high level of energy and smile at children from the moment they first make eye contact with your child until your child is they are out the door.

If you are visiting a gym, look to see if children are excited to see their instructor.  Are they smiling and laughing with the instructor? Or are they simply going about the motions? This speaks volumes about their relationship.

  • Supervision and controlling the class:

Let’s face it — the happiest coach in the world will be ineffective if they don’t have any control over the students in their class.  This is critical because if they don’t have control of their class, they run the risk of one of the student’s injuring themselves. Our coaches do not let children run amok. The children are taught discipline and structure while having fun and learning valuable life skills.  The children also need to be taught to wait in line and take turns.

  • Be involved & engaged.

Involvement and engagement are key.   Because gymnastics requires so much body awareness, it may be difficult to verbally explain how to do a bridge to a 5-year-old. If you can physically help them by gently leaning them backward over a mat or mailbox (as we call it) while spotting them, you can teach them how to do a bridge by being “hands-on”.

Our job is to teach gymnastics. In order to do that, we have to get down on our hands and knees, pull, push, run, jump, and sometimes catch – it’s exhausting but it’s worth it.

  • Communicate effectively and use positive reinforcement.

Positive reinforcement is key.  Does the coach communicate feedback in a way the child understands it? If the child doesn’t understand, does the coach reframe the instructions in another way? Most quality coaches know a simple way to success is to break skills down to their smallest pieces and teach them as parts.

If your child is interested in exploring gymnastics you’ve come to the right place!
